FMP #7

As for final model I am very pleased with the outcome. I fulfilled through it all my ideas and inspirations. The back part is done in a shape of a muscle, which has an entrance and leading to the seats upstairs. The seats are done in layers, so from the top they remind a shape of the ribcage. As for the stage part, I concentrated in the roof and did a lot of intersections, which suppose to look like fibers of the muscles.

In terms of materials I tried to combine wire, mod rock and tights together, as I preferred these materials the most out of those I was using for testing models.

What I regret is I couldn’t place the model in location so it looks naturally. But I suppose it is more about knowledge of using photoshop. I think my model looks really good in Hyde Park. First of all the architecture is very organic and looks very naturally in this environment. And also the color of my model is white which perfectly goes with green color.

BIG CHANGE!

As the time for final model came I got lost, as I couldn't apply the concept that I used for making test models for my final. I wasn't taking them serious. Then I moved from set design to interior, and now I planning to do the whole architecture, because I feel its difficult to express my idea and inspirations through interior, it limits me. I had a talk with my tutor Rupert, and he suggested to change the location. Previously I was planning to do performance space outside Laban Dance Centre, however my tutor told me that landscape of that place is already design and it probably will not work with my model. I went home and had a deep thought. I decided to research big public open areas in London. The answer was simple - HYDE PARK, as it is one of the largest parks in central London, often holding different festivals, protests and other events. According to my measurements the area which will be involved into my project is 110x70 m.

Model Making

As the research weeks finished I had to move to work in 3D. It was a big challenge, as I didn't know where to start from. Because I am still undecided about whether to do interior only, or interior and exterior I did different sketch models. I tried to experiment as much as I can, because I think I had a lack of experimentation in my previous projects. I used a big range of materials from sponge, tights, to metal wire and mod rock. There are different shapes featured from plain muscles shapes, ribcage, body part cross-overs, connections, organic etc. I think that making different shapes will make me understand which of the I prefer more and develop it for my final outcome. I also played with size and scale by placing small black squares (consider them as people) near my sketch models.

TRIP TO LABAN DANCE CENTRE

I have been waiting to go there for ages. Laban Dance centre is the largest dance studio in Europe and in order to go there you need to book a tour. Unfortunately, my tour was later than I planned it to be, but still I am glad that I visited it. It was founded by an Austro-Hungarian dancer and choreographer Rudolf Laban. This centre was located in different places all over England, but in 2003 it was moved to Deptford (south bank of the river Thames). It was designed by Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron, who had the same inspiration as I do for my project. The architecture and interior design is based on human anatomy and body movement. There is a sense of continuous lines inside of the building. Some parts of the ceiling are open, so people can see all metal details, wires etc. It is done on purpose, comparing to human anatomy illustrations in the encyclopedia, where you can see how everything works. It was very inspiring trip, which also made me think of the site for my project. I think I will use theatre inside the dance centre as the site, because I felt that it doesn't relate to the whole architecture, as it is just made of black wooden blocks.

FMP #3

Here some bits from my research. I want to change the idea of a classical theatre being posh and royal, to something more minimalistic and organic. I worked more on my research after the crit. Because while presentation, I got a feedback from my group and I found it very helpful. I listen to their advice and develop my research more, finding connections between movement and architecture.
